Thaw water.

From the journal of the Wolf of the North · a work of fiction

The first thaw made the creek louder than the herd approaching the cabin. The Åström twins played on the bank and only saw the reindeer when the animals were almost upon them.

I took the twins into the creek, cold water up to my chest, and held them on the far bank until the hooves passed. Their mother wrapped us in every blanket she owned. The thaw, she said, was always the season to watch.
