The seamstress tied red thread along the path after a herd drove her family into the woods. She hoped someone would follow it before her husband's injured ankle gave out.
I followed each scrap from tree to tree and found them at dusk. He leaned on me all the way home. She later stitched the thread into my torn sleeve, a small red map of where they had been.
